Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2

It's about time for some Mortal Kombat revival, and Kevin Tancharoen's Mortal Kombat: Legacy series 2 trailer is doing just that.  Renewing my interest in a 20 year old video game that captivated my young mind way back then.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Series 1 wasn't bad, I enjoyed a fair amount of it, and next weeks premier of the next season looks promising.  Set for release on Sept. 26th on Machinima.  From the trailer I noticed Kung Lao, Kenshi, and possibly Ermac join the fray.
My only complaints are 1) Why is Sub-Zero wearing biker armor? and 2) In general the costumes look less than authentic.  They are too plain, it seems like a step down from the last season.  As well as the film quality itself- the trailer looks better than fan films but only a little bit.
So far, Scorpion looks the best in what appears to be traditional, for Mortal Kombat at least, ninja garb.

In addition, Tancharoen is also working on a Mortal Kombat film reboot, most likely in it's own separate universe-
"I think everyone's intention is to start fresh because we want Legacy to live on its own possibly for multiple seasons, and when it comes to Mortal Kombat, it's been around for 20+ years. We're going to take the mythology and add another layer on it so it can live on for another 20 years, or more! I think this is a unique opportunity to set that ground work."

Mortal Kombat X: Release Date and Preorder Bonus Character Goro

Today Warner Bros. Interactive announced that NetherRealm Studios' forthcoming Mortal Kombat X will be released on April 14th, 2015.

In addition we've also learned that the original Mortal Kombat's feared 4-armed Shokan champion Goro will be playable as a preorder exclusive DLC character.  He hasn't been playable in nearly a decade, if I recall correctly it hasn't been since 2006's Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

Mortal Kombat X will arrive on PS4, PS3, PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

The New Mortal Kombat "Trailer"

It's been a while since I've been overexcited about a quick post for blogger, but I saw the pseudo-trailer for a potential new Mortal Kombat movie yesterday morning.  I am actually very intrigued.  So here goes my 15 minute break at work...

Here's a link-

http://kotaku.com/5558339/if-this-is-the-next-mortal-kombat-movie-sign-us-up

An impressive quality for a "fake" trailer, I'd have to say people may be seeing this some time in the near future. Decently high production value- the "trailer" by Kevin Tancharoen has some very good ideas throughout, although poor dialogue, assumably to please fans. ("Find Shang Tsung and finish him.")  By the looks of it, this potential Mortal Kombat would be a mix of the Dark Knight and Dexter.

It shows Jax(Michael Jai White) and Sonya(Jeri Ryan), police agents of some type in Deacon City, giving information to a shadowed prisoner in a police station interrogation room.
The first information is on a man with a genetic aberration giving him scales and a taste for flesh- code named Reptile.  I believe if they grunged him up a bit more and had him living in the sewers or a forest area it would be a bit more interesting.  But he looks to be handled well enough so far.  A bit more work could make him a movie villain that is not forgotten.
What doesn't make sense for him is Jax says his eyes were formed "inside out".  What the hell does that mean?  How would he even see?

Anyway, next up is a failed Physician that experiments first on patients, then on himself in the form of body modifications.  He even gives himself 10 inch retractable blades in his forearms.
He is code named Baraka.  This is a character I believe needs much more work.  He doesn't look monstrous or alien enough.  He's still too human.  And the dreads look ridiculous, they could possibly pass if he was the character Kabal mixed in, but I would think as Baraka, he would have a shaved head with short nails or spikes all over his skull.  The blades would also need to be seriously anchored in.  The way they look, they could be ripped off without a problem.  I also think he should not be wearing slacks and a white shirt, and a button down over it.  If he went to all the trouble of changing his face and arms, he would probably be wearing something a little more durable or closer to his persona.  Maybe a torn apart leather jacket and army fatigue pants with combat boots.

Johnny Cage is mentioned as well.  He is portrayed as an ex action-movie star working undercover with the police.  Baraka fights and kills him.  While a nice addition to the movie, he could be slightly better cast.  It is fairly humorous to think this is how he could be: a hotshot moviestar that overestimates his fighting abilities, then gets his ass handed to himself in a real fight.  The Baraka versus Cage fight scene needs more work.  It looks completely absurd, it needs more "real" fighting.  HEL-LOOOOO!!! WHERE IS THE FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHER???   No one is going to do a backflip standing a foot from their opponent.  Baraka even moves on all fours at one point!

They also have a still shot of Shang Tsung as a potential criminal mastermind, attempting to create a tournament for the worlds greatest killers, assassins, and fighters.  I believe he could be an unbelieveably amazing character if he stole the faces off people to be the "shapeshifter" he is known as in the games.  A man that learns about a person- their mannerisms, their habits, various traits, speech patterns, and fighting styles, etc- and after defeating them in battle he would steal their identity and become them.  Skinning them and using their faces as his own, he would literally take over their lives.

Turns out Scorpion is the prisoner Jax and Sonya are giving the intel to.  Not that the yellow shirt was a dead giveaway.  He is said to be the greatest assassin known.  Then there is then a quick flashback to him assassinating a man with a small spear through the neck and the man is yanked backwards off his feet. (a note here, I really like the blood falling into the wineglass shot- it is a wonderful shot)
Sonya and Jax are trying to get him to enter this underground tournament to kill off Shang Tsung, Baraka, and Reptile, and whomever else he may encounter, to make Deacon City safer.  Scorpion tells them he could leave their custody whenever he pleases.  The cuffs he has fall off and he asks them why he would help.  They give him a photo of Sub-Zero (YES!!! My favorite character, as the screen capture above shows, and I think they made him look quite awesome.)  Scorpion says he is dead, but Sonya says Scorpion had actually killed Sub-Zero's brother as the photo is from the day before.  The great assassin gets up to leave and Jax gives the "Finish Him" line (ugh.), and Scorpion turns to reply and has completely white eyes.  Which looks cool but leads me to ask the question, "If they are making this a gritty and realistic take, as spending all the time explaining Reptile and Baraka, why leave the impossible eyes?"
There should be some supernatural elements left in.  That was part of the appeal of the original Mortal Kombat, which I still believe to be either an homage to, or blatant ripoff of, Big Trouble in Little China.  (One of my favoritest movies EVER!)  Big Trouble in Little China shows how a great balance of real and supernatural can be handled well(excepting the orange beast-thing).

This "trailer" by Kevin Tancharoen has some very good ideas throughout, although poor dialogue, assumably to please fans. ("Find Shang Tsung and finish him.") By the looks of it, this potential Mortal Kombat would be a mix of the Dark Knight and Dexter. If they do end up making this, I feel it COULD work, it just needs more thought.  More character developement.  Another thing would be that this would work better as a television series.  Like an HBO or Showtime series.  That would give it 12 to 16 hours of runtime, so they wouldn't try and shove tons of crap into 2 hours.

Some of my own ideas for this:
1) If Jax and Sonya are there, would Stryker show up in full SWAT gear as a fighter?  Maybe an overly violent SWAT member that kills too many people.
2) The Sub-Zero thing.  Would Scorpion be protecting the brother like the story from MK2 or would he still be a rival clan member attempting to eliminate the competition?  Would they be wearing traditional, but slightly altered, ninja garb?
3) Liu Kang and Kung Lao- I believe they should be monks.  Like orange, maroon, and brown fighting monk robes, with shaved heads and all.  Possibly even working in tandem in fights.  Kung Lao could have a bladed hat, but it would have to be adapted into a more realistic one.
4) If Scorpion is a wraith with white eyes, Raiden could be Kang and Lao's god.  A forgotten Deity or some such, perhaps only appearing in dream or a vision sequence.
5) Where is Kano.  He would be an easy adaptation.  Man with bionic eye.  Simple.  He could also be a mercenary of another combatant, hired as bodyguard, or to kill off other contestants before the tournament.

Oh, my break is almost over, sorry about any typos.
Twelve year old Josh is squirming around in my mind, excited with any more information on this as possible.  Both good and bad.

Mortal Kombat 2011

I am quite excited to say that this Mortal Kombat has fully renewed my interest in the series.  It has no semi 3d environments to worry about, no focus on switching back and forth between fighting styles, no mastering a weapon in addition to normal fighting.  It has been brought back to it's roots.  Back to what made it popular in the first place.  Simply two people beating the crap out of each other in all it's bloody glory.

This game finally brought back the full love I had for it as a 12 year old in the arcades. Back in the summer of 1992 I would mow all the lawns in the neighborhood for money just so I could dump the quarters into another chance at punching someone's face into submission.   I even agreed to work at the MN State Fair watching a friend's dad's art stand for coins just to play more. Remembering the first time I got to see the infamous Sub-Zero spine-rip fatality that clinched my love for the game is so nostalgic.  Ah, the good ole days.... (sigh)
There are tons of little touches in this that bring back those feelings.  Seeing old levels like the "Pit" from MK2 with familiar faces fighting in the back on a second pit platform.  I have personally spotted Frost, Kenshi, and a male that looked sort of like Reiko.  It's also nice to see how filled out the areas have become.  Unfortunately, they have distracted me to the point of losing matches because I'm busy looking at things going on in the distance.  The new "Living Forest" is quite beautiful and has many people wandering around or dying in it.  Even Smoke is there peeking around like a perv from behind a tree.
(During a few cutscenes I believe I also spotted Bo'Rai Cho, Motaro, and Shinnok.)
Anyway, the creators have taken years of a game that became bloated by additions and weighed down by junk, and cut out most the fat.  The main game is a basic "mano a mano" 2 dimensional fighting game, with the additional option of a tag team, where each side gets 2 players to swap in and out with.

For single player there is the choice of Story mode, Challenge Tower, and Arcade Ladder.

Story Mode is a game that takes the player through the various levels and flips around which characters you use at any given time.  It's a good way to learn about the characters and what's going on in the game.  So near as anyone has ever learned, the story is something like this: In order to successfully invade another realm of the many out there, for whatever reason, a group of delegates must participate in a tournament of death and mutilation.  If 10 are won consecutively, you get to come on over and do whatever you please.  Usually more death and mutilation.  Well, this is the 10th tournament and Raiden has received a vision from his future self about needing to stop the Outworld emperor Shao Khan.
The Story mode is both good for story and learning how to play, and bad because it forces you to play as most everyone without giving you a choice to which character.  Small price for a fairly decent story.

The Challenge Tower is 300 challenges that vary from tough to absurdly hilarious.  Of course they threw in recognizable old games like "Test Your Might" and "Test your Sight" along with "Test Your Strike and Luck". There is a win without blocking challenge, rounds without being able to jump, fighting without heads or arms, and even kombat with the screen flipped.  I personally think the dialog is better than the gameplay on some of these levels- Zombie Goro making gross noises as responses and Mileena's reaction to you not accepting her handmade teddy bear are wonderful.
I personally believe this mode is good because die hard MK enthusiasts will learn new ways of playing and gaining insight into strategy.  There's also enough humor and strangeness to keep the play fresh.

Lastly there is the Arcade Ladder.  The mode that started it all.  Simple, effective, and entertaining.  One on one fights in a ladder that gets the typical normal matches, sub-boss, and main boss fights, finishing with an individualized video for your chosen character.

For multiplayer there is the regular one on one, two on two tag team, and a great new King of the Hill mode for online play.  King of the hill is nice because you can rate how the others are playing while watching like players in a theater to earn/give "Respect Points".  Which means cheapo players that are spamming the crap out of someone may get very low "Respect Points".  Whereas a fantastic player that goes easy on someone may get lots of points.  All rated by the others in the mode with you.  Granted- there will always be players with grudges that will give you a crappy rating no matter how decently you play.

Now to mention some of the downsides.  With all that feel-good nostalgia, it brought back with it the horrible aggravation.  The computer difficulty is unbelievably cheap.  It's one thing to make the AI a little faster and a little stronger, but it's a completely different thing to make it god like.
When I first loaded up I left the difficulty on medium.  No big deal, just a guy seeing what he can do without knowing too much in the way of new combos and special moves.  The first 3 to 4 matches weren't too awful.  I certainly wasn't winning by a landslide, no combos or chained maneuvers.  Then out of no where the AI difficulty took on an entirely new mode.  God mode.  Blocking everything without actually blocking, constant streams of super moves that continue hitting you until you are dead,  and 6000 hit combos that take enough damage off your life bar to last the next 17 rounds.

Somehow the "medium" difficulty became "you'll never win."  Which is odd because, while not an amazing player, I do fairly well against quite a number of other people in fighting games.  What I don't understand is why this would happen now.  I get it for a game created to be played in the arcades.  It gets into cheap tactics and unfair gameplay to sucker quarters out of people.  There was a time I remember playing Mortal Kombat 2 in the arcade and Shao Khan killed me in 4 hits.  Four hits.  As soon as the word "Fight" popped on screen he hit me with the sledgehammer and did the shoulder ram 3 times before i could even do anything.  The next round was roughly the same.  Unable to block the moves, i was completely powerless.  No contest.  I haven't played an MK game in an arcade since.

But... why now?  The difficulty level is absurd.  So I started a new round, this time on easy.  Same thing.  About 4 matches in it turned into a match that should be called "Mike Tyson Destroying a Toddler" mode.  With a couple of roommates gathered to make sure I wasn't just losing my mind, I tried again.
The AI play skyrockets into insanity- I'd land a 7 hit chained combo that would do mere scratches of damage, the AI would retaliate with a small few hit combo that devastated my life bar.  What the heck?!?  Even if it was the SAME COMBO, my life bar took excessive damage, and theirs would have nothing gone.
AI opponents became fast enough to recover from being tripped and be returning a punch before I finished the leg sweep.  They could have your hand visibly THROUGH their skulls and they wouldn't register as hits.  Multiple times direct hits wouldn't phase the AI, but I would be caught in a move I was CLEARLY blocking or nowhere near.
It is extremely infuriating to play against something that is so overpowered it's ridiculous.  Take the newly added "X-ray Moves", sure they are meant to do lots of damage but I landed a  fully charged one that did roughly 15% damage, the AI retaliated with the same one, through my block and took easily 50% off the life bar.  GAH!
It comes down to if you play even remotely well, the difficulty drastically increases to a level that is near invincible.  The AI will aquire impossible speed, super-superhuman strength, can block anything with a thought(actual blocking is unnecesary for them), and can hit you with any move, anywhere on the screen.  This might be so players don't get cocky.  Or it could be because the game's creators are just in love with making the gamers suffer as much as the characters they play as.

While the absurd difficulty growth is a serious issue, and there's a few imbalanced characters, the game is TOTALLY worth playing if you've ever liked Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat X Official Announcement Trailer!

One of the Mortal Kombat Series creators had been teasing audiences with cryptic Tweets for the past few weeks, and today gave the reveal and trailer for the next installment of the series- X.

It's looking pretty damn spectacular.  Combat seems to be still the same old side-view 2D, with the inclusion of using environmental elements, such as a tree branch, to your advantage.  I was hoping they'd evolve the game into something more like Bushido Blade- with a semi open world to run around in and allow a much larger interaction of the environments.
They've also shown we get the X-Ray attacks back, individualized weapons return, and the iconic move that started it all remains intact- The Fatality.
The graphics have come a LONG way since the first one way back in 1992.

Sex & Mortal Kombat: 100 Things In Common (Guest Post by @EricVBailey)

Sex and Mortal Kombat have a lot in common.

     So I wrote a list.

1) You can choose whether you’ll have sweat or you’ll have blood.

2) You might go two or three rounds.

3) Successive impacts may elicit heightened vocal response.

4) Skill with hands is good but some may prefer skill with feet.

5) There might be costumes involved.

6) You might sneak in a match at your buddy’s house.

7) Your parents aren’t entirely comfortable with your participation.

8) You aren’t entirely comfortable with your parents’ participation.

9) You went through a phase of ‘researching’ more information online.

10) Years ago, you would’ve had to rely on magazines for this ‘research.’

11) You may stick with a main for a while but try to switch it up sometimes.

12) Some of your friends have no clue about it.

13) Remember that period in high school when everyone was talking about it?

14) Every new release still feels like a big deal.

15) The acting in the films is not the greatest.

16) The films also lend unrealistic expectations with inaccurate portrayals.

17) Still, many have their favorite movie on the topic.

18) Some may worry about their children being exposed to the subject prematurely.

19) Politicians occasionally take fanatical positions concerning it.

20) Some prefer the men, some prefer the ladies.

21) Thousands of people are enjoying it right now, at this moment.

22) Some people don’t even like it.

23) There is plenty of amateur art online, and a lot of it is inappropriate.

24) People have written entire books about it.

25) Be careful -- overdoing it can exhaust you.

26) It might cost you some money.

27) There are some spectacular finishing moves out there.

28) Apparently there are YouTube tutorials to help improve your skills.

29) Typically, men are lauded for playing the game but women are met with disrespect.

30) Fists play a part.

31) You may see some unusual or extreme anatomy featured.

32) It has a long history, generations’ worth.

33) You can match up with a partner online.

34) Might make for an interesting first date.

35) Some married couples don’t even bother with it anymore.

36) You don’t see it play out in public much. But you might.

37) You can play by yourself but it’s not as fun.

38) You probably won’t make much money writing about it.

39) You can enjoy it in the bedroom, or maybe on the living room sofa; the kitchen, more rarely.

40) You used to see it at the arcades a lot more.

41) If you could go at it for five hours straight I’d be impressed.

42) I understand if you’ve never tried it, but it’s harder to believe you’ve never heard of it at all.

43) If you keep getting kicked in the face, maybe you’re not doing so well.

44) If you do it a certain way, you end up with a baby.

45) If you do it another way, you end up as friends.

46) And if you really screw it up, you might have your spine torn out of your body.

47) It’s rare to have more than two players at once.

48) The setting doesn’t really make a huge difference, honestly.

49) Often, one player is going to have a much better time than the other.

50) Typically, a “nothing but roundhouse kicks” strategy is frowned upon.

51) There are very few friends of whom I’d be comfortable asking about their performance.

52) You’d probably get in trouble if you were caught doing it at work.

53) “Excessive jumping” is totally a thing.

54) I understand Nintendo is reluctant to release this kind of content.

55) I’d prefer to not have someone watching over my shoulder while I’m going at it.

56) Some people are more vocal than others while it’s going on.

57) C’mon, don’t make fun of people who are new to it.

58) I think the Bible has some relevant commentary.

59) Juggling at the same time would be rather difficult.

60) The right soundtrack can help set the mood.

61) There are oh-so-saintly prudes out there who probably take pride in never trying it.

62) I see chatter on Twitter about it occasionally.

63) It’s the sort of content that gets an “R” or “M” rating.

64) Sometimes you just have to growl “Get over here!”

65) If your doctor says you’re not healthy enough for it, please listen to them.

66) The 3D modeling has really advanced over the years.

67) It’s all about who’s in control.

68) There are firm boundaries, and it is good to know them.

69) Leave your grandmother out of it.

70) The classic debate: Should you try everyone, or stick to one main selection?

71) You might have luck finding it on Craigslist.

72) The motion-capture work is always interesting.

73) If you record yourself doing it, someone out there would probably watch.

74) Let’s be honest: Sometimes it’s gross.

75) Mileena is either the best or the worst, depending on how you look at her.

76) You might have your heart ripped right out of your chest.

77) Personally, I don’t like involving food, I think it gets messy, but hey, you do you I guess.

78) Have I ever paid $60 for it? No. Has someone else? Yeah. I bet a lot of people have.

79) Has it gotten worse as you’ve aged? That may depend on who you ask.

80) You have to know how to push the right buttons.

81) But timing is crucial. Timing is the difference between success and disappointment.

82) However, pressure is important too. You have to know when to go hard and when to lay off.

83) Your first time is going to be an awkward disaster.

84) Sometimes it leaves a big mess.

85) You might stay up too late doing it.

86) Can you play in VR yet? I’m not even sure.

87) Try moving your thumb in gentler circles. Flick back at just the right moment.

88) You can face one way or the other way.

89) Some of the most innocent-looking people have far more experience than you’d think.

90) Be respectful of your neighbors, try not to be too loud.

91) I bet there are people who are absolutely obsessed.

92) No, I’m not interested in your podcast about it.

93) Make sure you’re properly hydrated beforehand.

94) You may experience sweaty palms for the duration.

95) You may have to compete with killer instinct.

96) Never pick a guy named Stryker.

97) There’s a chance your play will involve some electric shock.

98) It’s the shape-shifting warlock you have to worry about.

99) Use that block button to help prevent unwanted advances.

100) Your opening move might be the most important.

     And have a bonus round:

101) Whoever gets the first blow doesn’t always win.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Brian Tee is the New Shredder

After hearing the recent TMNT2 news about Tyler Perry being cast as Baxter Stockman my hopes were a bit down.  Especially since it followed on the heels of the announcement that Arrow's Stephen Amell was going to be playing fan-favorite Casey Jones.  Something about Perry just doesn't fit the role, he seems to be perpetually miscast except in his own Madea films.  He just hasn't shown himself to be a good actor.  Whereas Amell is alright, nothing special, but good enough to be a plausible cast.

Granted, as most of my thoughts are, I'll really wait to see them in action before being too judgemental, who knows- maybe Perry will knock it out of the park with this role.  I just always pictured someone like Deon Cole from Black-ish.  He has the both the look of someone that exudes intelligence, and also has a wonderful sense of comedic timing.

Now, we get news that the Shredder himself has been recast, and it sounds awesome to me.  Brian Tee has gotten the role.  He's been in The Wolverine, a couple episodes of Grimm, and he was also in the decent, but very short-lived series Mortal Kombat: Legacy as Liu Kang.  From what little I've seen of him, he's already a much better actor than both Tyler Perry and Megan Fox combined.  This is the news that is keeping me following the film with higher hopes than the last one.

Brian Tee is taking over the role from Tohoru Masamune who played him in the first new installment of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.  I just hope Platinum Dunes producers like Michael Bay don't try and pull a TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze.  That was one horrendous movie and effectively crushed the hopes of any good TMNT films in its near future.

In other good TMNT 2 related news Earth to Echo director David Green is on board, with script writers Josh Appelbaum and AndrĂ© Nemec returning.  Earth to Echo was very well directed, and although it was a very predictable movie, it was still quite well done.  I'm still not sold on the script writers, but I'll still give them another chance.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is set to arrive in theaters June 3rd, 2016.
