Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order: EA & Respawn Teases Upcoming Action-Adventure Game at E3 2018

Almost 9 months after writing about EA's poor handling of the Star Wars license ("Of Midichlorians & Microtransactions: The Force Asphyxiated"), we are finally getting some good news about the franchise's game front.
During the EA E3 2018 conference IGN met up with the CEO of Respawn Entertainment Vince Zampella for a little hint at what's coming down the line.  Though he could only tease what is on the way from the developer, and it definitely sounds a great deal better than any of the Battlefront 2 content or the multitude of mundane and unmemorable Star Wars shovelware on mobile we've been getting.
The game they've been working on is titled Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and is a 3rd person action-adventure.  We'll be playing as a Lightsaber-wielding Jedi during the "Dark Times" between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, when the Jedi are being hunted down and eradicated after Order 66.  The Force Unleashed 1 and 2 were great and sold quite well, and there's not currently a whole lot of information to go on here, but it's plenty enough to wet our appetites and make us hungry for the future of Star Wars games again.

Presumably, after the backlash from all the single-player Star Wars games being cancelled EA may have finally listened to the fans and decided it would actually be lucrative to create and finish one- especially after seeing the sales numbers of games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Assassin's Creed, Last of Us, Uncharted, Nier: Automata, Dishonored 2, Resident Evil 7, and so on say the single-player market is thriving quite well.

I'm curious to know if this will be the game that Visceral Studio had been working on before EA decided to  have it "revamped and moved to a different studio."  Or if this will have a link to the "open-world Star Wars game" I read about recently.  The last news about Visceral's game said it would be moved to members of EA Vancouver and EA Worldwide, but who really knows what's going on behind the scenes.  Makes me also wonder if there are any plans to revisit or pull from either of the cancelled Darth Maul game or Star Wars: 1313 at all.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is tentatively slated for a Holiday 2019 release.

Star Wars: Rivals- Another Mundane Mobile Game on the Way & Thoughts

In accordance to modern mobile gaming trends, another cheap-looking Star Wars game is on the way called Star Wars: Rivals.  It's being touted as "the first real-time Star Wars competitive action shooter for mobile."
Players may currently pre-register for Star Wars: Rivals, and in doing so gain access to some bonuses.  For the pre-registrations, we'll receive for a limited time, exclusive access to special support units.  For those who do so through Goggle Play, they'll receive access to the Imperial Death Troopers to fight alongside players in PvP skirmishes with advanced weapons and cover fire.  For iOS users, they'll get access to the Rebel Special Forces, giving them health restoration out on the battlefield.

Instead of a new and interesting 3rd person shooter or action/RPG that many fans have been clamoring for, we are getting a yet another bland, half-assed, cover-based shooter with a Star Wars skin- complete with grind heavy, loot-box-laden bore-fest.

In a post I wrote months ago, "Of Midichlorians and Microtransactions: The Force Asphyxiated," I explained a large part of the Star Wars games' problem:
This doesn't bode well for the Star Wars game as it sounded like the game was "shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game," under Visceral's good hands, but now it may be becoming something much closer in alignment with EA's push towards a "games as service model."  Meaning it might wind up like Battlefront, being all hype and no substance, and completely riddled with preposterous microtransactions for every little thing, of which we can only expect more of this same old shit from with the release of Battlefront 2 soon.  It's the same thing for Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, Star Wars: Force Collection, and Star Wars: Force Arena, they are cheap games designed to siphon money off of players instead of creating a unique and memorable story in a beloved franchise.  All the really good Star Wars games have been cancelled or shut down- Star Wars: 1313,  the mobile game Star Wars: Uprising, the Untitled Darth Maul Project, and the amazing potential of Disney Infinity
So when EA says, "We want to take the time to get each game right, to make it unique, to make it amazing," I don't believe it.  When the game arrives we'll see if they really want a good story and experience, or if it follows the path of the Dead Space games, getting worse with each new installment, getting worse with each step away from a great single player experience, and closer to the large multiplayer messes.  We even know that Dead Space 3's original plan was great, and EA flubbed that up in the name of the almighty dollar, proving that they've become the money-hungry monsters worshiping a Marker with a big green S spray-painted on its front.

Will Disney and EA realize that maybe we might want something more akin to the very underappreciated and truly fun Dead Space Mobile game?  It's a small, but highly replayable, 3rd person game with a good controls and a great story that expands the lore and universe of the main games, while telling us a riveting stand-alone tale from a completely new perspective.  Sure, they could add a competitive shooter arena on top of it, but there's been a plethora of complaints about Disney/EA not wanting to make single player games recently, which is completely idiotic- have they not seen how well The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has done?  Or how about Hellblade, Nier: Automata, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Cuphead, Nioh, and Uncharted 4?
Maybe some of the backlash is due to not producing anything for the neglected single-player market.  Just take a look at the mass

We want new mobile games like Dark Forces, X-Wing/TIE Fighter, or the Jedi Academy games.  Or how about a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic version of Marvel Future Fight?  With the ever-expanding roster of Star Wars characters, they could have YEARS of material and more than enough income from players.  We want them to make something worth playing, worth investing our time and money into, not another pile-of-crap, shovelware game.

Disney TOYBOX Action Figures: Lineup, Price, and Packaging Revealed!

About a week ago Disney Infinity fans received a small bit of good news.  The Disney Store teased the release of new action figures featuring the extremely distinct Infinity art design style.

Now, it must be stated for clarity- these are NOT Disney Infinity extensions and don't have anything to do with the game- they are only action figures based on the art style.  The designs were taken from Infinity and re-engineered into a completely new toyline, with added articulation, and will be launched under the "Toybox" as an homage to the game, as was confirmed by former Disney Infinity VP of Production John Vignocchi on twitter.

The launch lineup will include figures from Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar franchises.  There will be Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and Jessie from the Toy Story films as the Pixar Toybox figures, Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man from the Marvel Toybox, and lastly, Rey, Kylo Ren, and a First Order Stormtrooper from The Force Awakens in the Star Wars Toybox.
They all look amazing and have great packaging, and I really hope they continue the Toybox line with many more to come.

The figures will be available EXCLUSIVELY on ShopDisney for $12.95 each on Nov. 3rd.

Disney INfinity Returns via TOYBOX Action Figures

INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

Last year was a bad year for Disney INfinity.  Small problems began began to emerge with the announcement that the Marvel Battlegrounds play set would ship with a single figure, then there was news that there would not be a 4.0 release, but rather 3.0 would be getting updates to continue the Infinity line.  In March Disney Interactive said they'd be dropping out of E3 without a reason giving, and then they officially announced in May of 2016 the video game series would be cancelled.

ENDLESS FUN

It was a shock to fans, and there were a slew of problems that could've easily put off the toys-to-life game's closure- such as adding far more actual game content, more replayability, and even the simple feature of resetting a figure's data more than twice could've gone a long ways to it selling better.
What the series did right, however, was in the art design.  The Disney INfinity design style was absolutely superb, and now fans of it are in for a treat.  Disney INfinity focused Youtube channel Infiniteer Adventures spotted an intriguing ad on the Disney Shop- showing that on November 3rd, Disney is releasing action figures that look exactly like they are ripped straight from the game's gorgeous designs.  Making the case even stronger, is the fact this toy series appears to be named directly after the specific Disney INfinity game feature called the TOYBOX as can be seen from the image above, featuring Rey and a Stormtrooper from the Star Wars: The Force Awakens playset.

It's great to see that such wonderful toy designs are being salvaged for an even better use, bringing us articulated versions of the INfinity toys from Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar properties.  This also offers the opportunity for fans to potentially obtain some of the previously cancelled figures such as Spider-Gwen, or the truly stunning looking Doctor Strange toy.  This is some truly exciting news coming a year and a half after the closing of the game and someone was smart enough to have held on to the game's slogan and put it to great use- "Infinite Possibilities, Endless Fun-" and we can all be thankful for it.

EA Delays Star Wars Project & Shutters Visceral Games

OF MIDICHLORIANS...

Everyone's least favorite company EA has brought us a double dose of great news today- not only is Visceral Games being closed, but their current Star Wars project is being "revamped and moved to a different studio."

EA's Executive VP Patrick Söderlund released this news in a game update post, including the unfortunate shuttering of the developers behind the tremendous Dead Space series, which declined in popularity after EA started implementing its own monetizations and the like- and thus diluting the sci fi horror roots that made the first game so damned good.

...AND MICROTRANSACTIONS

Through game test concepts and feedback through development, and after hearing "what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace," EA's decided to make these changes.  EA claims to be "reimagining central elements of the game to give players a Star Wars adventure of greater depth and breadth to explore."
They say they wanted to pivot the way the game plays in a broader, more varied experience, allegedly offering players "more agency" in a way that will give us a greater depth and breadth to the exploration of the Star Wars universe.  Though that might sound great, it also sounds like it really means the core of Visceral's initial plot and design will be plucked from its dying body and replaced with an emotionless, dead loot box heart- presumably to be filled with vast and shitty Midichlorian-filled load of microtransactions and a multiplayer focus.

THE FORCE ASPHYXIATED

All the really good Star Wars games have been cancelled or shut down- Star Wars: 1313,  the mobile game Star Wars: Uprising, the Untitled Darth Maul Project, and the amazing potential of Disney Infinity.

A team from EA Vancouver will lead devs from EA Worldwide in picking up and working where Visceral left off.  The Star Wars game was expected to release in the late fiscal year end of 2019, but has been delayed and awaits a new anticipated release date to be announced at another time.

On a lighter note, here's a fun, old Star Wars: Tiny Death Star post.

Star Wars: Uprising: The Rebellion Has Been SHUT DOWN

I received a slightly disappointing email a few hours ago.  Apparently the only Star Wars mobile game I actually enjoy is shutting down.  It sounds like the Empire is winning.  First LucasArts closes shop (taking 1313 with it), the amazing looking Maul game got cut down, then Disney Infinity became finite, and now the Uprising has been quashed.
There aren't many good Star Wars games that are available, and even less so for mobile.  Which makes this that much more sad.

     Kabam's email:
"Despite the best efforts of our team here at Kabam, unfortunately, Star Wars: Uprising will soon be decommissioned. On November 17th, 2016, all Star Wars: Uprising servers will be shutting down permanently. As part of this shutdown, we will be shutting down payments on November 17th, 2016 to prevent additional payments from occurring. For information about the shutdown, please visit the FAQ HERE or your in-game message. We hope that you enjoyed Star Wars: Uprising, and would like to invite you to come check out one of Kabam’s other great mobile games, listed below. Finally,We would just like to again thank you for your commitment to Star Wars: Uprising. We hope to see you again soon!"
I never did get to posting a review, but I spent a lot of time playing Uprising.  It had a really good feel for a mobile MOBA of sorts- with levels, missions, and goals and so on.  There was a decent level of customization and character differentiation with varying factions to join and compete against.   Kabam had somehow crammed far more entertainment into Uprising than I would've guessed was possible.  The game had a lot to like.  But of course, if the income isn't coming in, maintenance and work on the game cannot support itself.

If you'd like to experience the game you'll have until 9am Pacific time on Nov. 17th, 2016.

Here's a couple shots of my character- Sella Lazru.

Star Wars: ROGUE ONE: Trailer & Thoughts

THE TRAILER

Director Gareth Edwards is bringing us the first in a series of stand alone films in the saga, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.  Taking place prior to the events of A New Hope, this story follows Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) as she is sent by Mon Mothma to steal the Empire's plans for the Death Star.  Presumably the ones that Princess Leia has at the beginning of Episode 4 locked in R2-D2.

QUICK THOUGHTS

Mothma says she's, "Reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined"

To which Erso replies, "This is a rebellion, isn't it?  I rebel."

While it sounds great, being reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined is not a good thing.  Even the Sith are not wholly reckless and undisciplined.  I have an inkling that someone that rebels simply to rebel would be a danger to both sides, and probably wind up being killed due to said recklessness.  Regardless, this new take on the Star Wars film universe is much more appealing than the main saga itself.  We're finally getting some Star Wars: Underworld type stories with grit and realism and it is quite refreshing.

That being said, I also think Disney is really pushing the limits on how many Star Wars films (and all the Marvel movies) that people can handle.  There needs to be some real down time to avoid over-saturating the market and numbing our fandom nerves to the greatness that is the Star Wars Universe.

On the plus side, this looks, to me at least, more intriguing than the main course of Star Wars we're receiving.  I'll see pretty much anything they put out, but this one opens the door to more of the Underworld stories that held my attention through the comics years ago.
I can now only hope for a future Tag & Bink 3D animated series of shorts in a more humorous take on The Clone Wars or Rebels type shows to break up the extremely serious nature of all the current stories.

Rogue One is set to hit theaters on December 16th.

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Announcement Trailer & Thoughts

The Brick Awakens

In a completely unsurprising announcement, Warner Bros. Interactive, TT Interactive, The LEGO Group and Lucasfilm announced jointly this morning that LEGO video games are returning to it's foundation with the Star Wars canon with LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be available on June 28.

Honestly, this shouldn't be a shock to anyone.  If ever there was a series to milk for money it's Star Wars.  LEGO sells well, the games always sell well despite the bugs, flaws, and and all the other myriad problems that still haven't been remedied since LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game way back in 2005 ( I think I still have my original copy!).
All their games are fundamentally fun, but the little nagging issues that linger really put a damper on that fun factor.  I mean seriously, they haven't figured out the twin-stick flight is better than the single-stick and two buttons to control the ascent and descent they've been using?!?
Even the most recent release was a bit lackluster, LEGO Marvel's Avengers, which is essentially an updated LEGO Marvel Super Heroes with all the X-Men and awesome other characters cut out.  I'm not kidding, the open world New York City and S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier are pretty much exactly the same as the last game.  It's still fun, and they've improved the flight controls just a little, but the levels are every bit as unclear as ever.  The story jumps all over the place and doesn't follow the movies in any particular order.  Clunky combat and the very wonky object action detection is very frustrating.  There's also some issues with unresponsive controls and a problem (at least on PS4) with preventing players from swapping characters in a level when you absolutely have to do so to proceed that I've encountered numerous times.  In my opinion, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes still stands as a much better game than LEGO Marvel's Avengers, though they are both worth playing for fans.

Other than that LEGO Jurassic World was very fun and I am super excited to play the Ant-Man DLC pack for the Avengers in a few months as well- and of course, being the sucker that I am, I'll be once more coming back to the LEGO Star Wars games with The Force Awakens set in June.

Spaceballs 2: The Farce Awakens: Considered by Yogurt Himself (Mel Brooks)

Following hot on the tails of The Force Awakens being released Mel Brooks has officially stated that a sequel to his cult-classic 1987 spoof of Star Wars, Spaceballs, might be in the works...

     ...sort of...

...all right, it was almost a year ago.

Back in January Brooks told Adam Corolla on the "Take a Knee" podcast that there were some ideas floating around for Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, that in itself being a joke from the original film.
This is by no means a confirmation, but simply a re-consideration of an interview he had early in 2015.  I spotted an article over at the Escapist Magazine from earlier today that the writer might not have known this was from nearly a year ago, but still- it makes me wonder if Brooks is still thinking about this.

A lot of the original cast has either died (John Candy, Dom DeLuise, Joan Rivers) or left acting as Rick Moranis had, but there's still a chance.  If Brooks finds a way to pull out a can of Liquid Schwartz and hope that Moranis returns and they can convince Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga to return, there could be a whole new generation of Spaceballs.  Even the original writer had some ideas for a sequel, as Brooks told Parade in 2014, "Tom [Meehan], who wrote it with me, has great ideas and I would love to do Spaceballs 2."

For now we can only cross our Schwartzes and hope Brooks mentions some news about this in the near future.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens: A Rambling Review and Thoughts *SPOILERS AFTER THE BREAK*

I'll try to avoid the major spoilers for those of you that have not seen the film.

Right off the bat, they get the crawling text perfectly, it even has that slight wobble, which is an almost imperceptible addition that points to the amount of detail that carries through the whole film.  I can't say that this fully makes up for the Prequels and the altered versions of the Original Trilogy, but this film has set the film back on the path to the light side.
Many of the shots in the film visually call back to A New Hope, and plenty of the story mirrors the steps taken then.  A good call on the creators' part.

What is even better, is early on there's a joke by Poe Dameron in a troublesome situation, that at first seems off-key and a little awkward making it feel out of place, but the magical thing here is- it actually works.  And it works very well.  The film keeps this effect going through it's entirety.  They've balanced the humor and seriousness so neatly that I was rather surprised by it.  I mean, there's an extra hilarious scene with two Stormtroopers backing away from a room they hear Kylo Ren raging in, and it definitely feels like a nod to the Tag & Bink Star Wars comics.

Now Abrams as a director tends to try and make every scene stay in motion, with either people or the camera continually in action- normally I am really bothered by this, but he's finally used it to wonderful effect because the scenes where the camera doesn't move are even more impactful because of it.  They hold extra tension because we aren't playing catch up as a viewer, we become much more focused on what is happening in the moment.  Once again though, many of the scenes echo those from the Original Trilogy, leaning on that for extra weight, and it does the job quite wonderfully.  This is shown most spectacularly through Kylo Ren.  He outwardly appears to be the new form of the Sith, an indomitable dark lord toppling everything in his path, but inwardly he struggles to find the right way to go- and ends up falling on old habits in taking the easy path to the dark side and trying really hard to hold on to the anger and pain to make him strong.  He fears that he might be pulled back to the light side.  They've been so reliant on the Original Trilogy and fearful of making a whole new path, but you know, I don't mind it.  It feels familiar and wonderful at the same time.
The Force Awakens clings to the oldie-but-goody mentality while creating an overlay of a new story.  The film is clearly miming the Original Trilogy, but the foundation for the franchise's redemption is there inside, waiting to be awoken.

To be fair, there are a few things that bothered me, such as the over-the-top action with the aliens shortly after Han and Chewbacca meet up with Rey and Finn, the truly ludicrous size of the Starkiller base, and the super dramatic, overly lengthy pause in the last lightsaber fight where clearly Kylo Ren would've taken action seeing the person obviously accessing the Force.  Or the fact Captain Phasma was put in a ton of commercials and has a very small role in the film.  Or why are the "rebels" still called rebels, when they essentially destroyed the Empire and are still mostly in control, and the general coincidental paths crossing.  BUT!  I can overlook most of these things, because the rest of the film has done such an amazing job.  The Force is balancing again, the magic is returning to the series, and The Force Awakens is getting things back on track for future Star Wars generations.

In the end the film is extremely entertaining and I will end this part of the review with the quote from Han that perfectly sums up what The Force Awakens is- a return of the Force, "Chewie, we're home."

Star Wars: Cancelled Darth Maul Game May Not be Force Awoken

Last we heard Game Fly's CEO Dan Borth was hoping that the previously cancelled Darth Maul focused Star Wars game would be "resurrected, " but things aren't looking too good for it right now.  Game Informer has an exclusive interview well worth the time to read, that makes it sound like EA doesn't want to let anyone else play with their precious Star Wars license.

When we last talked, you said you were hoping to talk to EA or Lucasfilm? Has this happened?
I never personally talked to them, but they sounded pretty non-interested. I think the whole thing could be summed up with "No comment." We didn't even have a conversation, really, and I think the thing that is most depressing is that we didn't even really talk about it. ... It really feels like [EA] has an exclusive party going on, and they're just not interested in talking about anyone else joining the party. It's more like, "Nobody outside of EA is going to do stuff, end of story.”
With such a money-making franchise and EA's cash-grab mentality, this is exactly what it looks like.  They don't want to let someone get even a sliver of the pie.  Which is kind of stupid because the Reddit AMA went viral and incited a huge amount of fan support and it would end up making EA money without their need to actually do anything other than publish the finished product.

When asked if they had been asked to stop making the game, Borth said, "No."  That could be a hopeful thing, but he follows it by clarifying and saying that it's pretty clear the project isn't going anywhere, and that they (and the Star Wars community in general) are not being listened to.  That is very disheartening to hear, because we'll end up with more half-assed mobile Star Wars games like Uprising, Galaxy of Heroes, and Commander.  Nothing with the heft and quality of The Force Unleashed, which is a huge disappointment for many hardcore Star Wars gaming fans.  Even Battlefront wasn't nearly as great as it could've been- I mean they didn't even bother to include a campaign mode.  We'd like some real plot driven stories and expansion to the Star Wars universe through way of the video gaming experience.  Way to go EA.

Seriously EA (and Disney), as a gamer and a lifelong Star Wars fanboy, listen to your buyers:

Star Wars: Lightsaber Escape: May the Phone be with You

Google has created a wonderful little web game that ties directly to your phone that gives players the ability to turn their phone into a more elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

Using this link [ Star Wars: Lightsaber Escape ] with Chrome on both your computer browser and your phone, and follow the instructions to play a neat little rail-shooter, or more appropriately, a rail-lightsaber-er.  It's a cool little game to hold you over until you can see The Force Awakens, or play the Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars: The Force Awakens play set which arrives tomorrow.

In addition Google had made a nice little Easter Egg for users that put "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away" into the search bars.

Star Wars: Uprising 2.0: The Game Finally Gets Lightsabers and The Force

     The official 2.0 update synopsis:
"Embark on a quest to unlock the power of the light and dark sides of the Force, as you seek your path to one of the Galaxy’s rarest weapons for the elite few, the Lightsaber."
I'm actually glad I waited to post my full review of Star Wars: Uprising, as now the free-to-play mobile MMO game has added the two biggest missing items from a Star Wars title- the Force and lightsabers.  There's actually a ton of new additions to the game, including more missions and gear.  The whole list of changes can be found on Kabam's official Uprising forum.

The game was originally supposed to be merely an underworld type group escaping a planetary blockage and breaking the grip of the Empire's remnants taking place in between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.  It's pretty interesting they are changing the game and adding these things for the 2.0 update.  I mean, now that they've added the most magical part of this universe I may actually return to the game.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Disney Infinity 3.0 Trailer has Arrived

As a huge fan of both Star Wars and Disney Infinity the official trailer for the upcoming tie in playset for The Force Awakens is a great joy.  It looks like we'll be getting all the main characters featured in the official movie trailer, but we'll have to wait and see if we might get a Captain Phasma or some other as yet unseen characters like an Old Luke Skywalker.

In the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Play Set, players will travel to a galaxy far, far away alongside new heroes and old friends in search for a much-needed ally. Playable characters include Finn, a soldier on a path to adventure and danger, and Rey, a true survivor who is resourceful and capable. Both will join Poe Dameron, the trusted pilot of the Resistance who uses his expert flying skills to travel the galaxy, and Kylo Ren, an enforcer for the First Order who terrorizes the galaxy with devious acts.
The previous two Star Wars playsets, Twilight of the Republic and Rise Against the Empire, were both tons of fun with loads of stuff to do.

Disney Infinity 3.0's The Force Awakens playset will be available Dec. 18th.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens & The Evil Luke Skywalker Theory

After reading this lengthy and relatively well thought out theory of Luke Skywalker falling to the Dark Side for the upcoming Force Awakens movie, I felt prompted to write a response post. While it is very possible that Luke might turn to the Dark Side, as he did in the very good comic book series Dark Empire, I don't believe it will happen in the film. I already put up a small post about this, but I feel a little more explanation is necessary.

I'll try to respond in the order Conery presents his own thinking.

Luke and The Dark Side

He clearly does not turn. He sees what he's doing, giving in to the hate, and stops. To illustrate, he has the epiphany moment, and turns and tosses his lightsaber away. What I think IS important here is that Luke is the one to bring BALANCE to the Force. Not by helping eliminate the Sith, leaving only Jedi, but rather he found a way to balance the two halves- emotion and logic. It's even shown in his having one dark glove and one bare hand. He pleads to his father for help, and Vader once more becomes Anakin- love overcomes hate.
"Good. Now fulfill your destiny, and take your father's place at my side."
"Never. I'll never turn to the dark side. You've failed your highness, I am a Jedi, like my father before me."
Seriously, if Luke had turned, he wouldn't know the Emperor had the lightning ability, nor would the Emperor have said, "So be it... Jedi."  This was the moment Luke became a true Jedi Master. By rejecting the Dark Side.

This ties directly into Conery's next portion- he believes that in Yoda's infallible wisdom lies unalterable truth, "Remember your failure at the cave." The vision showed Luke's path to becoming his father. Or conversely, that his relationship to Vader was being revealed, which could jeopardize his chances to save his friends. So, yes he was being impulsive and hasty, but he was also relying on the Force to guide him.
"Only a fully trained Jedi Knight, with the Force as his ally, will conquer Vader and his emperor. If you end your training now, if you choose the quick and easy path as Vader did, you will become an agent of evil."-Yoda
Just because Yoda is seen as the wisest being doesn't mean he is truly all-knowing. Right before Luke leaves Dagobah for Bespin, Obi-Wan says about Han and Leia, "Even Yoda cannot see their fate." Yoda doesn't necessarily know the future.  This is shown once again in Attack of the Clones, when Obi-Wan and Yoda are wondering why Kamino isn't in any of the Jedi archives, a youngling student suggests maybe someone erased it. A small untrained Jedi child saw something quite evident that the 900 year old Master missed.

Later, when Luke returns to Dagobah Yoda has tells him, "No more training do you require, already know you, that which you need." With the message that he only has one more thing to do to become a Jedi- to confront Vader, which as I said above, he did. He became a master by rejecting the Dark Side.

"A Jedi shall not know anger.  Nor hate.  Nor love."

What Yoda didn't account for is a new form of Force user, one that CAN use emotion as well as the Jedi logic. The Jedi failed because they cut themselves off from attachment. During the final battle, Luke gives up his weapon- as Yoda also said, "A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack." Clearly, through the Prequels we see this isn't exactly something they follow themselves. Over time, the Jedi became detached and the Sith became overly attached. The wedge drove the two paths to diverge further from each other than they may otherwise would have.

Anakin was touted as being The Chosen One, to bring balance to the Force. Perhaps he did, but not how many people think. In the end, Luke appealed to Vader's love for him to overcome the Dark Side, resulting in his redemption and the death of the Emperor. I think Anakin brought balance by having Luke, and both of them learn that emotions aren't the evil the Jedi taught. It was their shared connection that allowed them both to go on. It was the way Luke found the path between using logic and emotion together.

Luke Lying to Jabba

For one, he's not lying to the Emperor. He did lie to Jabba, but you know what, Obi-Wan lied to some stormtroopers. He even used the Force to do it.  Sometimes the Jedi lie.

"Who is Luke Skywalker?"

This is a key element here.  Kathleen Kennedy got J.J. Abrams to come on board the film by asking him this question. It is really important because he is currently the pivoting point for the Force itself. He is the last of the remaining Jedi. As Han Solo points out in the full Force Awakens trailer, "It's true. All of it. The Dark Side. The Jedi. They're real."
These things have fallen into myth.  They are rare and nearly forgotten, and only one person has answers left- Luke Skywalker. He is the last true light against the rising darkness of the remnants of the Empire in the First Order, and he's in hiding.

"The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga. The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story." -Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy
The Force Awakens may be a continuation of the Skywalker legacy, but as the original trilogy and prequels passed the torch, I believe this is another case of that- Luke's importance doesn't necessarily mean he's the film's focus. And as I've previously mentioned, he's probably hiding somewhere. Luke has become the Obi-Wan Kenobi, the mentor to a new generation of Skywalker.

In the first Star Wars related book for the new series, Aftermath, there's an interesting tidbit. It's got a familiar red bladed lightsaber being sold to three ominous looking figures, and there is also a picture on the wall of a Vader helmed head with the words, "Vader lives" written by it. I don't think Vader is alive, but that with all the time that has passed, the miraculous way tales get spun, maybe Kylo Ren is trying to use that feared name to become the Dark Lord of the Sith in his strange obsession. Maybe he's trying to clone or resurrect him or something, I don't really know.
And lastly, the most obvious reason I think Luke is still good. This Kylo Ren toy mask says, "Together we will destroy the resistance... and the last Jedi."

If Luke did turn to the Dark Side, it would've long after Return of the Jedi. It's more likely he's simply in hiding, and hanging out with his Force ghost buddies. He might even be a Force ghost himself, but I highly doubt he's evil.

Star Wars: Cancelled Darth Maul Game May be Re-Awakened

In a recent Reddit AMA Red Fly Studios CEO/Owner Dan Borth has said that they are hoping to "resurrect" the game from it's cancellation from LucasArts' closing its doors.  To do so the studio is working in their off time on a next gen demo to showcase the Sith Lord's abilities. (The video below is from the old gen systems)

The game is described as taking place in Maul's pre-Phantom Menace time and would give us a great example of the path to the Dark Side through our own actions as Maul.
Young Maul age 9 or 11 to right before Episode 1.
We wanted to show what he went through to become a Sith. Showcase the torture the Emperor put him through. Show how you as the player would have made the same mistakes and ended up a Sith.
The Jedi are incredibly flawed in their opinions on not getting involved but getting involved and spying on people and using their abilities to get what they want. They are just like the Sith but don't admit it - the Sith admit it.
With all the Star Wars stuff flooding the market, we could use a game like this.  The card game is boring, Uprising was alright, and the new update for Knights of the Old Republic looks great, plus Battlefront will be out soon enough, but we need something more along the lines of The Force Unleashed- so hopefully EA will see the merits of a game like this and support it.  Maybe they'll also consider bringing Star Wars: 1313 back into production as well.  I don't really want a Boba Fett game, but it'd sell and I'd sure as hell buy it.

As a fallback plan, Borth mentioned, "Hopefully EA will see the value in us re-skinning our combat mechanic to be more in line with what they are thinking for Star Wars if they are not interested in Maul."  The fans want some in-depth 3rd person action games, and this makes sense as Maul has been confirmed to still be alive.  They could even cut in portions of his post Obi-Wan fight, and up to the more modern times to explain how he survived.

To show our support Borth has asked us to go on Red Fly's Twitter (and other social media outlets) and let Disney and EA know we want this with the hashtag #WeWantMaul.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Thoughts on the Evil Luke Skywalker & Kylo Ren Theory

I keep seeing these stupid posts concerning Luke Skywalker from The Force Awakens claiming Kylo Ren is actually Luke Skywalker. (1, 2, 3, etc.)  Seriously?  This is demonstrably untrue!  Luke IS in the trailer, and he has a whole voice-over in a nice calm voice.  Sure, he is wearing the dark outer cloak, but the under cloak appears to be the typical old Jedi garb that his own mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, wore.  And it might take place with his, or Han and Leia's possible children- but I think it's Rey and Finn he is talking to, but I can't discount the fact Kylo might be a child hearing it from him either if it is from the past.

Should I also mention the fact there's been plenty of pics of Kylo Ren without his helmet, showing Adam Driver's visage?  And for the people thinking Luke might be evil because he isn't on the poster forget that Obi-Wan was NOT included on the A New Hope posters.

I can't say that he won't be a villain in some capacity, but he is certainly NOT Kylo Ren.  Personally, I think Kylo Ren is of the Skywalker bloodline, more probably a Solo, being Han and Leia's child. (also note the first part of his name Kylo- S-KY-walker + So-LO... just saying...)  It would make sense in the Star Wars film saga being a chronicle of the Skywalker legacy to have him be one.  I mean, I also think that Rey might even be a Solo as well, but that's another story.

Back to Luke- I think he has gone into self imposed exile as a way to preserve the Jedi.  Following in Kenobi's footsteps, maybe he's gone to guard something.  Or I've also thought that maybe, being the only true remaining Jedi as well as being the son of the most powerful Jedi that ever lived, he may have gone into hiding to protect others from an almost uncontrollable amount of Force power.  (Note: Disney scrapped the Expanded Universe, and in Aftermath Luke is mentioned as being possibly the only one left)

As for Kylo, he clearly is following in the path of Vader.  He's already trying to imitate him with the mask and suit, but what training does he have?  Pretty much nothing.  What if Ren is a wanna-be Sith?  He doesn't have anything other than the stories of Vader to go from.  No master to follow.  He has a small grasp of the Force and built his lightsaber to emulate Vader's- Or from Vader's dropped lightsaber, as my friend suggested- to which I responded that would be a great mirror to seeing Luke's old saber (also from Vader/Anakin) from the trailer as well- but it looks like it might not be quite right and he hasn't got an instructor to guide him.  It has a weird unstable appearance, which makes me wonder if the hilt is actually an exhaust of some sort.  Like Ren couldn't get it to work properly and made due.

However...  with those ideas, I don't discount the idea that Luke may have turned towards the Dark Side.  That is always a possibility, no matter how doubtful it may be.  Though, I also think that if Luke and Kylo fought each other, I fully believe Luke would crush Ren without a problem.  Ren appears to use fear to his advantage, whereas Luke at the end of Jedi was not only a competent Force user, but a confident Jedi Master and would see Ren as a minor threat.  The equivalent of Luke from A New Hope going up against Vader right away in the first film- it wouldn't even be a close fight.

Overall, I think Luke is the new Obi-Wan, serving as a mentor to Rey and Finn, to combat Kylo Ren.  He may even become the new Yoda- the teacher for a future generation of Jedi.  Which might be a very important thing here.  These new Force users have no teachers outside of Luke, either good or bad.

Sorry this is very rambling, but you get the gist of it.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Second Official Trailer!

Two and a half minutes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has just appeared online for all of us that don't watch football.  Plenty of new bits for us fans to drool over and even more to speculation fodder has been given.  It looks stunning.

I'm quite greatful that Abrams has kept the trailers to a minimum to avoid massive spoilers like he did with Star Trek: Into Darkness.  This looks to be about 1,000 times better.

The Force Awakens on December 18th.
