Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes is Coming to Television

A mere week or so before the third book in Stephen King's Bill Hodges trilogy, titled End of Watch, hits book store shelves on June 7th, a 10 episode television adaptation of the first book, Mr. Mercedes, has been announced.

King's book is a pure hard-boiled detective novel:
In the gloomy pre-dawn hours of a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of unemployed hopefuls are lined up for a job fair. Without warning, a merciless driver plows through the crowd in a roaring Mercedes. Eight people are killed; 15 are wounded. The killer escapes into the early-spring fog never to be seen from again. Until now...
Detective Bill Hodges is a battle-hardened and streetwise crime fighter originally assigned to the Mercedes killings. Now retired, Hodges has lost his way in boredom and depression craving the thrills of taking down the region’s most notorious criminals. When a disturbing letter from the Mercedes Killer arrives at his door, Hodges soon finds himself uncontrollably drawn into a cat-n-mouse pursuit with stakes beyond comprehension.
The part of retired detective Bill Hodges will be played by Brendan Gleeson, while the villain and IT tech worker and part time ice cream truck driver Brady Hartsfield will be played by Anton Yelchin.  Both of these actors are tremendously talented and the show sounds like it's off to a great start with just the cast.  I'm really curious as to who they'll get to play the roles of Jerome and Holly, as they are extremely important parts in the book, and subsequently the sequels.

If this does even remotely as well as Hulu's adaptation of 11/22/63, it'll be an amazing show.  Many fans will be looking forward to seeing "The Happy Slapper" in action.  Honestly, I hope it does well enough to warrant making a second season for Finders Keepers, and then finish it off with the third book as the third season.

Mr. Mercedes will premiere in 2018 on both DirecTV and AT&T Uverse.

ALIEN DAY: In Space, No One Can Hear You Celebrate: April 26 (LV-426)

IN SPACE, NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU CELEBRATE

Because every day is some sort of celebratory day now, 20th Century Fox has made today "Alien Day."  It was announced back on March 29th, and of course there's probably a monetary component involved at the bottom of this decision to help hype the 30th anniversary of the original Alien film this July as well as boosting info for both the upcoming films- Ridley Scott's Prometheus follow up and Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 film.

The date itself should be a familiar number to fans of the series as it is the number of the planetary body LV-426.  The distress signal came from that the Nostromo picked up, then later to be colonized and nuked from orbit to complete the Colonial Marines' disastrous bug hunt.

To kick things off Jeffrey Godsick (President of 20th Fox Consumer Products) had this to say:
“The ALIEN franchise holds a special place not only within the universe of Fox but with movie enthusiasts across the galaxy.  We noticed that fans of the ALIEN films were starting to rally around the calendar date of April 26th - given the connection to the planet LV-426. Quite simply, it gave us the idea to do something special on this day; to officially mark the occasion alongside fans and to build excitement online, in stores and once again, in theaters."
And then, from the official press release:
"Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products announced today an out-of-this-world global celebration of the ALIEN franchise culminating with a special 24 hour, fan-focused social media event on April 26th – a nod to LV-426, the planet from the iconic ALIEN films. ALIEN DAY (#AlienDay426) to encompass a wide range of executions including nationwide screenings, never-before-seen consumer product activations and the kickoff of the ALIEN: Ultimate Trivia Challenge*, allowing fans to test their ALIEN knowledge – with the chance to win memorable prizes every 42.6 minutes on Twitter."
#ALIENDAY426

I'm not going to lie, I'm really into this.  Dark Horse Comics has a ton of the Alien comics on sale for 50% off on Comixology (sale ends on 05/02 leaving plenty of time to shop), so I'll buy a bunch of those.  Although I've already got Alien: Salvation and can safely recommend that to any Alien fan or any Mike Mignola fans, it's a great short book.  There's a wealth of great material in there for fans.

NECA and Funko have new figures on the way, Titan and Audible books, and other special edition merchandise will be available.  Zen Studios made an Alien Pinball app game available on iTunes, Google Play, or Xbox.  In addition, participating theaters will be showing an Alien and Aliens double feature!  But the coolest item might be the fact Reebok is issuing the iconic high-top ALIEN STOMPERS!  Sadly though, the shoes are all sold out and going for ridiculous Weyland-Yutani prices on Ebay.

To join in on the face-hugging fun just go on over to Twitter and Instagram @AlienAnthology or on Facebook at http://facebook.com/alienanthology.  The horror here will be how much we all spend on all this cool merchandise.

Personally, I'll be celebrating by playing some Alien: Isolation.

Conan the Barbarian: Funcom Announces "Conan Exiles" & Trailer

In late December there was a nice little message from Age of Conan developer Funcom, saying they'd be announcing a new Conan game announcement coming in January.  Lo' and it hath arrived!

     Here's the official site's description:
SURVIVE. BUILD. DOMINATE.

Play alone in single-player mode, or forge alliances and make enemies online on both public and private servers.

Will you dominate the exiled lands or will your enemies sacrifice you on the altar of their god?
You are an exile, one of thousands cast out to fend for themselves in a barbaric wasteland swept by terrible sandstorms and besieged on every side by enemies. Here you must fight to survive, build and dominate.

Hungry, thirsty and alone, your very first battle is that against the harsh environment. Grow crops or hunt animals for food. Harvest resources to build weapons and tools. Build a shelter to survive. Ride across a vast world and explore alone, or band together with other players to build entire settlements and strongholds to withstand fierce invasions.

When strong enough, march forth into battle and wage war against your enemies as you fight to dominate the exiled lands. Sacrifice enemy players on the altars of the gods and shift the balance of power your way. Unleash your fury in savage, fast-paced combat and execute bloody and bone-crushing attacks that will see heads rolling and limbs flying.
We aren't given much in the way of information on actual gameplay, but the survival tease and hints leave me anxious to re-enter the Hyborean age to join in tales of adventure undreamed of.  To me it sounds like a combination of action, survival, and maybe a bit of world building.  I'm curious as to how much of each we'll be forced to do.  I really don't want to be hunting down berries for hours just to have enough energy to ward off the dark armies of the evil wizard Xaltotun.
No matter what it is, I am very intrigued, and my excitement is growing even more because rumor has it the new Schwarzenegger The Legend of Conan film's script has recently been completed.

Early access to Conan Exiles is set to begin summer 2016 and PC launch slightly later, with consoles to follow.

11.22.63: First Full Trailer

Hulu has released the new full trailer for its Stephen King adaptation of the book 11.22.63, and it is appears it'll be the best adaptation of any of his works into cinematic form.

If you haven't read the massive tome, I highly recommend it.  It is truly a love story surrounded by intrigue, mystery, and time travel.  In short, a masterpiece, and Hulu seems to have nailed the right feel for the show.

     11.22.63 begins on Hulu President's Day (Feb. 15th) 2016.

Stephen King's 11.22.63: Hulu's First Teaser Trailer

Hulu just released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming time-traveling 8-part event series based on Stephen King's book 11.22.63.

Hulu Original series 11.22.63 is a thriller in which high school English teacher Jake Epping (James Franco) travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy — but his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, falling in love and the past itself, which doesn’t want to be changed.
11.22.63 also stars Chris Cooper, Josh Duhamel, Cherry Jones, Sasha Gadon, T.R. Knight, George MacKay, Lucy Fry, and Daniel Webber.

11.22.63 premieres on Hulu on Feb. 15th, 2016.  President's Day.

11/22/63: Stephen King's Time Travelling Masterpiece Coming to Hulu

For the first time in a VERY long time, I am really excited about a new Stephen King adaptaion for film, or at least television in this case.  It's been known for a while that King's amazingly well done time-travel story 11/22/63 was going to arrive on Hulu relatively soon.

James Franco as Jake Epping.
     The official press release synopsis:
"The Hulu Original series 11.22.63 is a thriller in which high school English teacher Jake Epping (James Franco) travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy-  but his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, falling in love, and the past itself, which doesn’t want to be changed."
In what Hulu is calling a 9-hour limited-series event, 11/22/63 will begin as a as miniseries, and if it is popular enough it'll continue.  If not, it'll be done.  That is an understandable situation as King's adaptations usually leave a lot to be desired.

11/22/63, to me, an avid time travel story and movie fanatic, as well as a huge King fan, am looking forward to this opportunity to get to finally see one of his works done right.  What I think this has going for it is the fact that I truly believe this is one of the greatest love stories ever written.  Sure, the main focus and plot is the belief that altering time to change the JFK assassination will make the world a better place, and all the obstacles that get in the way- including time almost actively trying to right itself, fighting to keep things the way they are.  But the subplot that it holds is an absolutely beautiful love story, undeniably pulling the tale together and anchoring it perfectly as a damn amazing novel.  Honestly, I believe that this is one of the best love stories of our generation.
Entertainment Weekly posted an interview with the show's executive producer Bridgett Carpenter that gives me great hope.  Not only are they pulling in some wonderful talent, they are putting in a huge effort to make it seem not just realistic, but accurate.  They've been using archived recordings and photos and really delving into making this seem like it really belongs in that time.  She describes the reasoning of such production value for this adaptation, "It's a yarn, but it needs to be seeded in the truth and the reality of the time."  That dedication is something to hang our hopes for the series on.

11/22/63 stars James Franco, Josh Duhamel, Chris Cooper, Cherry Jones, Sarah Gadon, T.R. Knight, Lucy Fry, George MacKay, and Daniel Webber.  The series is brought to us by J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot.

11/22/63 is set to premiere Feb. 15th, 2016.  President's Day.

Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles Being Adapted into Video Games

Well, actually the Rothfuss and Lionsgate deal will be a multi-platform deal- encompassing adaptations into movies, video games, and television shows.  I recall hearing about this quite a while back, and it was apparently being discussed way back in July of 2013.

The story of Kvothe as a man that cannot live up to his legend any longer in the world of Temerant.  If you've ever been a fan of fantasy books, and would like what can only be called a writer's writer of fantasy, Rothfuss' 2007 debut book The Name of the Wind is a must read.  The second book in the trilogy, The Wise Man's Fear, is every bit as amazing a follow up as it could possibly have been.  And as we wait for the final installment of the series (Doors of Stone), there are 3 novellas to keep readers going.  The Slow Regard of Silent Things in particular should be read by anyone invested in the series as I feel it is the linchpin of the Kingkiller Chronicles, or at least the key to unlocking this "thrice-locked chest" of a trilogy.

“Honestly, I've never been very interested in a straight-up movie deal, but Lionsgate was willing to work out something different, a multiplatform deal where they develop the films, TV series, and games simultaneously. That will give us the screen time to develop the characters and show off the world. What's more, through this whole process, they've treated me with amazing respect. I never thought a studio would approach me as a creative partner who understands how stories work." - Patrick Rothfuss
Lionsgate President of Interactive Adventures & Games, Peter Levin, is going to head the production of the Kingkiller Chronicles videogame adaptation.  Levin was behind the John Wick videogame that was published by Starbreeze Studios, noted for fan-loved games The Darkness, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and Payday 2.

There aren't many details yet about this, but I'll be posting as I hear them.  In addition, on the chance that Rothfuss announces the date of the Doors of Stone at Nerdcon, I'll be reporting that instantly as I'll be in attendance next Friday.

With the short seasons few and far between, Sherlock has kept a level of achievement in television entertainment that is hard to match.  Which is great- they always manage to keep us wanting much more and avoid over-saturating the market causing boredom or losing momentum with the show in general.

Today we receive a glorious new trailer for the period piece Christmas special episode trailer.

The Sherlock Christmas special is "Coming Soon... ish"

Jurassic World: Official Global Trailer & Some Thoughts

With today's release of the long global trailer for Jurassic World, we get some more of the bigger story with the park.  There's the larger and smarter genetically modified dinosaur called the Indominus Rex one-upping a Tyrannosaurus Rex, a whole lot of death and pandemonium, and Chris Pratt leading a pack Velociraptors in what amounts to a prehistoric biker gang- and I'm pretty ok with all this.  Even if the story comes out a bit cliched, the visual feast looks to be a buffet for our summer viewing pleasure.

Jurassic World releases on June 12th.

Lego Jurassic World: First Full Trailer

In addition to the less-than-great other Lego video game (The Hobbit) news today, at least we get a full trailer for the Lego Jurassic World game.  Despite my disappointment at the Lego Hobbit news, this Lego Jurassic World trailer still has got me almost as excited as I was to see Jurassic Park when I was 13.

They've relied heavily on scenes from the first film, Jurassic Park, here instead of including ties to the upcoming Jurassic World.  But, then again, maybe they'll start bringing in some recognizable pieces of that film the closer to release it gets to avoid potential spoilers, as that movie will be a full quarter of the game.  The first 3 films will comprise the rest- Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, and Jurassic Park 3.
It's also been let out that players get to play as humans, dinosaurs, and hilariously Mr. DNA.  Which serves as a segue into the building feature- allowing for customization of dinosaur DNA for making new dinosaurs out of pre-existing parts- they've added a build-a-dino to the game!
Traveller's Tales Games looks to have brought their brick-based touch from the prehistoric era right into the park.

Lego Jurassic World is set to release in June for:
PS3, PS4, Ps Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, Wii U, and the 3DS.

Lego Hobbit: WB Leaves Players Hanging Without The Battle of Five Armies DLC, "There, but NOT back again."

In another case of unfinished games, Warner Bros have cancelled the end of Lego The Hobbit.  Players take up the role of Bilbo Baggins, we get to go "There," and in news today, we find we will no longer be coming "Back Again."

There, but not back again...

     The Warner Bros.' Statement:
"The LEGO The Hobbit videogame gives LEGO and Middle-earth fans a fun, new way to experience the legendary adventures of Bilbo and company as told in the first two films of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. The game provides an excellent set-up for the concluding chapter of Peter Jackson’s film, The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. There are no plans to develop DLC based on the final film of the trilogy."
WB have also stated they have NO plans for another game based on the film.  So apparently, Lego Hobbit purchasers have been slightly deceived.  We were led to believe that the concluding chapter would become available at a later date so the story would be complete- alas, we now know that it won't happen- leaving us with essentially only two-thirds of the game we thought we would have been buying.

It is really disturbing to me that now we have WB and Traveller's Tales Games leaving things incomplete and selling us essentially an unfinished product.  What we instead get is a playable trailer and set up to watch the third film.  This is a poor trend in gaming, the selling of parts instead of a whole product.  What a frustrating thought.
Funnily enough, I still haven't opened my copy because I was waiting for the 3rd part to arrive as they had mentioned at the London Toy Fair in January 2014.  This has also made me hesitant to purchase their upcoming titles Lego Marvel's Avengers and Lego Jurassic World.

Sir Terry Pratchett: Alas, He Has Walked Through That Door

The wonderful creator and writer of the immeasurably beloved Discworld books has passed through death's doorway.  Sir Terry Pratchett's works have been a joy for millions, and hopefully will stand against time to change and brighten the lives of million more for generations.  After 8 years of Alzheimers, he has moved on at the young age of 66.  As sad as I am, the announcement tweets were a nice bit of humor in his patented style in this dark time.  His work has made my life better, and I'll continue to buy his books and give them out as packets of happiness for others.

Mrs. Frisby & The Rats of NIMH to Become Another Rebooted Franchise

With Hollywood's current goal to reboot every beloved thing under the sun, it's no wonder they are turning their eyes towards the 1982 film The Secret of NIMH, based on the Newberry winning Robert C. O'Brien book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.  They are masterpieces.  Each in their own right.

MGM has obtain the rights to the book and have a writer of all 5 Ice Age films, Michael Berg, set to script the project.  It's said to be a live action and CGI hybrid film focused on retelling the origin story with hopes of turning it into a franchise.

For those of you who haven't read the book, I would highly recommend it- as much as I would recommend the old animated film, it is a classic.  Here is the book summary and link to Amazon:
"Some extraordinary rats come to the aid of a mouse family in this Newbery Medal Award-winning classic by notable children's author Robert C. O'Brien.
Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, is faced with a terrible problem. She must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved. Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma. And Mrs. Frisby in turn renders them a great service."

Stephen King: Revival: Review

*Mild Spoiler Warning*

In recent years grand master of horror Stephen King has been bringing us tales of a much more ordinary terror, stories set in more mundane terms.  Joyland was about a small carnival killer book with some ghostly talk (there's a nice reference to it in Revival), Mr. Mercedes was a straight up detective murder mystery, and even Dr. Sleep was a toned down follow up to The Shining.  I would never go as far as to say he's slipping, but he's definitely becoming a little more subtle.  Now that I've said that, I must also say Duma Key is one of my top 3 favorites of his books, following The Dark Tower Book 4: Wizard and Glass and the tie of It and 11/22/63.

Something Happened

"That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die."

Revival is the story of Jamie Morton.  A man that knew the Reverend Charles D. Jacobs since he was a young boy, and has seen his transformation over time.  Jacobs began as a happy, married man and father.  A man of god with a strange fascination with electricity- an obsession really.  After tragedy strikes, Jacobs gives a blasphemous sermon- resulting in his banishment from the church and the loss of faith from some of the parish.
Jaime and Jacobs cross paths a few times over the course of 50 years and they become tied together as Jacobs' experiments lead ever closer to his ultimate goal- to see what's after life.  We get to see through Jaime's eyes as Jacobs go from small church preacher to full on healer using his "secret electricity" to almost Frankenstein-ian scientist pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

What King has done in Revival isn't a fully fair game for the reader- usually things may be accurately speculated with seeded information or hints and in this book's case, I felt it was not truly conveyed (outside of the Lovecraft quote he prefaces the novel with).  For the culmination of the book King doesn't give us a peek beyond the veil by pulling back the curtain, he rips it right off the wall- tearing away our fragile view of the world.  The reason I say this isn't fair to readers is because all the Lovecraft books held a sense of dread, pervading throughout the work, King's Revival did not.  Building tension and that unsettling feeling throughout the whole story and it just wasn't there.

The tension seemed to be lacking at many points. leaving me with the feeling that something should be happening, but wasn't.  It is a bit frustrating to know that "something happened," and never really get any true indications of what.  No clues to the strange and dark things to come.  Perhaps the supernatural terrors were on lunch break?  Sure, one might chalk it up to thinking it would add to the disorienting nature of the experience to have something this drastic occur in the end, but I really feel that it came off as too large of a stretch.  There needed to be a little more in the way of perceptible dread leading up to the ending where Revival takes a turn for the weird.  The books mentions the slow boil method to cook a frog, but here it goes from a simmer straight to boiling over with no in between.

As it is, Revival is still a great read, if you are a fan of King in any way, at least.  It has all the typical staples- young love, terrible deeds, manipulation, experiments, and shock value horror.  It's still more than worth a read and I'd still recommend it solely for the descriptions of the "curtain pull" moment at the end with its nice homage carved in basalt.

John Carter of Mars: Sequels Logos Revealed by Andrew Stanton

Aside from the fact this was a great movie done in by mismarketing, among other things, it remains a favorite of mine since it arrived in theaters.  John Carter should've been marketed with the "of Mars" attached and touted as the "Story that started it all!" because in reality, it did.  It heavily influenced all big science fiction stories after it through the last whole century.  From Flash Gordon and Superman to Star Wars- they are all progeny to Edgar Rice Burrough's Princess of Mars series, and that fact might've helped sell it to movie going audiences, because many that didn't know the story really precedes all the the ones people think it copied is kind of important for people to know.

Anyways, director Andrew Stanton posted a couple neat logo teases had the movie done well.  Perhaps it was done to generate some cult appeal and late sales of the film, either way it's more advertising for the film I adore.

Sadly, for all of us fans that loved the movie, since Disney has acquired John Carter's progeny, Star Wars, any new hope for the Martian Saga sequels remains far, far away.

Here's another John Carter post I did professing my enjoyment of the film:

But What About Second Winter Part 2: Elevenses.

Once again we Minnesotans are subjected to ridiculous weather.  We went from summer, to fall, then to winter, and spring, then winter, then spring, winter, and spring, and now we are somehow back in winter again with all the vast amount of snow Mother Nature feels like burying us in.

Well, I made the second winter meme before it was cool, and now have made a follow up to go with the quote I was using in the first one- this time it's about Elevenses, which naturally comes after second breakfast.

I have to say, after returning to winter once more, I am really getting sick of having to shovel my way out of the house.

New Patrick Rothfuss Novella: The Slow Regard of Silent Things- Due Nov. 4th, 2014 (Kingkiller Chronicles)

Most of my friends have had to put up with me constantly raving about Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles.  Next to Neal Asher, Terry Pratchett, and Joe Abercrombie, Rothfuss has been seated as on of my favorites. When I first read The Name of the Wind I was blown away at the depth and breadth of the world building.  Then I was horribly disappointed because the next book was so far off.  Then The Wise Man's Fear arrived and I went through the same thing.  Now we wait for the third installment Doors of Stone, which has no release date in sight.

Instead of a picture, I decided to put this Google Talk with Rothfuss up for interested readers.

Well, he has a few things announced recently, and because I procrastinated long enough I can now group them into a singular post.  In the time we have to wait for the finale of The Kingkiller Chronicles we will get a few nice treats... two novellas and a novel.

The first is addressed in this post's title- The Slow Regard of Silent Things.  It is a new novella focussed on, in my opinion, one of the best characters from the first two books- Auri.
"The Slow Regard of Silent Things is set at The University, where the brightest minds work to unravel the mysteries of enlightened sciences, such as artificing and alchemy. Auri, a former student (and a secondary but influential character from Rothfuss’s earlier novels) now lives alone beneath the sprawling campus in a maze of ancient and abandoned passageways. There in The Underthing, she feels her powers and learns to see the truths that science—and her former classmates—have overlooked."
The second item is a novella about Kvothe's protege Bast.  It is titled The Lightning Tree and will be available June 17th in the Rogues Anthology edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois.  The book will also feature a ton of other wonderful authors such as the previously mentioned Joe Abercrombie.

The third item is a novel about Laniel Young-Again.  I couldn't find an estimated release date for that, sorry.

On a side note- from Rothfuss' Reddit AMA back in January (?) - someone asked something that I've been curious about since I first read the book. "Can a person learn their own true name? If so could they command it?"  If I recall correctly, he doesn't answer, but I've speculated on here and on Twitter that Kvothe has done exactly that.  I believe he may have locked a part of himself in his thrice-locked chest to prevent more harm than what he's already done, and subsequently locked himself out (possibly by locking the part of him that knew how to open the chest in).
If memory serves me right, I believe Elodin reacted harshly when Kvothe asked if it was possible for someone to change their name- which Kvothe has already outwardly done.  So it makes sense that he would've learned his own name, and then locked it away, thus restricting his powers- and thwarting future disaster from occurring.
Then again, maybe he locked another person or a god away in it...

J.R.R. Tolkien's Beowulf Translation and Commentary Being Published

For years I've read about Tolkien's take on the old epic poem Beowulf and now we'll finally get the commentary and his own translation on it.  In addition we'll be getting a series of lectures Tolkien gave at Oxford about the poem.

Tolkien said the story was, "laden with history, leading back into the dark heathen ages beyond the memory of song, but not beyond the reach of imagination."  I am quite eager to read more of his thoughts on the epic.

It was evident in both The Hobbit and his Lord of the Rings trilogy that he was heavily influenced by old stories, and being a Professor of Old English- Beowulf undoubtedly left a mark on his own work.

The book will be available on May 22.

John Carter (of Mars)

Two years ago today, John Carter of Mars was released in theaters.  Unlike most of the reviewers and critics, I actually love this film.

Seriously, why does everyone keep calling me He-Man?
Many things may have hurt it including the notorious reviewers, but honestly I hope it turns into a cult hit.  It's doubtful considering how poorly it did monetarily.  I would urge anyone who hasn't yet seen the film to pick it up.  It is based on the original book (Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars- from 1912 (the serialized version, whereas the novel was collected in 1917, it's 100 years old) and is rightfully the progenitor of all the science fiction films that came after, such as Dune, Star Wars, and Flash Gordon.  I'm not kidding, John Carter was created before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, even before my favorite pulp character Conan.

Anyways- after seeing it at least 3 times in theaters I was quite ecstatic, and when it arrived on Blu-ray and DVD I have since watched it like 20 more times.  For me this is one of those films I can watch on repeat.  They even did what I thought to be impossible, they clothed Dejah Thoris.  John Carter has even been updated in a way I actually have no issues with.  Technology and explanations make much more sense now that they've altered the story.
No doubt this movie does have flaws, but it is still a tremendous film.

By Issus I find myself chanting Dotar Sojak!

I doubt we will get another chance to return to this beloved Mars, but we can always dream...

"Ock Ohem Oktay Weez Barsoom!"
