The Hobbit: We Have a Gandalf Meme and a Reading Response

I haven't blogged in a few days and I feel kind of bad about it.  The reason is because I'm back in school full time in addition to working 45+ hours a week in patient care.  Well, I figured I'd knock out a blog with a meme I thought of while writing a reading response to my Fantasy Literature class' first book The Hobbit.

This is just a bit of irritation I feel at how Gandalf is used as a back door solution to EVERY problem that arises.  Clearly I'm not the best writer by any means, but you'll get the point.

     Here's the paper/response:
Joshua Barsody
Reading Response 1
     An issue of convenience.
There is something that bothers me quite a bit about the Hobbit, and that is the problem of convenience.  Every step of the way a strange new peril arises and it's solution is so perfectly easy that it's a let down.  The peril wasn't really peril because [ fill in the blank ].
The first noticeable one is with the trolls encountered by Bilbo and the dwarves.  Bilbo tries to pickpocket a troll and the troll just happens to have a purse that happens to spek! (p36)  All right, a very odd occurrence in a strange land, I can accept that, but then things get better!  Gandalf arrives and saves the troup due to the stupidity of the trolls- and upon searching the trolls stash- they find two famous weapons(p42)!  Named blades, Orcrist and Glamdring, that Elrond know-it-all just happens to know on sight.  These two also happen to be recognized by goblins (later in the story), one would guess by such amazing verbal descriptions because I don't think goblins live long enough to recall something that happened "ages ago."(p52)
(Note: for the above, I know the weapons are named with runes, but wouldn't people name their weapons after others' famous weapons?  Perhaps, like naming a child after family or friends.  It just seems too easy for the weapons to both be singularly named and have a history known to Elrond and the goblins that probably should've been forgotten "ages ago.")
Once again, that's not soooooo bad.  Now we get to a real whopper, the first one I rolled my eyes at.  “Moon-letters are rune-letters, but you cannot see them,’ said Elrond, ‘not when you look straight at them. They can only be seen when the moon shines behind them, and what is more, with the more cunning sort it must be a moon of the same shape and season as the day when they were written.” (p53)  Are you effin' kidding me?!?  So they just happened to not only be there looking at the map, but also in the same season, under the same shaped moon (with the map held up to it's light, instead of being read in candle light), AAAAAND also -quite conveniently- with an individual that can read them?!?  It feels so ridiculous that all that happened by sheer coincidence that it knocked me out of the story.
"Of course it was Gandalf." (p65)
For the biggest piece of convenience in writing- Gandalf, the get-out-of-jail-free wizard.  In most circumstances the dangers our Ereborian friends (and Bilbo) get themselves into don't feel like actual danger.  They have a wizard!  One that's power is whatever is necessary at the moment except when it's Eagles, because somehow, Eagles trump Gandalf's ace card.  And on top of that- if Elrond is Mr. Knows-it-all, then Gandalf is Mr. Knows-a-guy.  When he needs answers he knows who can.  Why aren't there unanswerable questions and mystery?  Why isn't there real danger?  Granted, there is a chance it may play to the fact that if Gandalf leaves it'll force the over-reliance on Captain Cop-out with magic to save the day to end, and make the others actually save their own butts.
Bilbo and the gang run into trolls?  A wild Gandalf appears! (p41)  Caught by goblins and in need of saving?  Gandalf to the rescue! (p64)  Surrounded in warg territory and stuck in trees?  Gandalf is on the job... with the aid of some Eagles. (p 107)
Gandalf, while needed for the story, is too bothersome with how often he continually saves them (and vanishes).  It is bothersome enough for me to wonder- what are the dwarves doing anyway- he's practically babysitting them, and other than Gandalf starting them all forward, none of the dwarves has really contributed to their journey in any meaningful way yet.  They are just bearded children following the fix-all grandpa Gandalf, and feel unnecessary in what should rightly be their own tale instead of a checklist of things they were saved from by Gandalf.
So without Gandalf and all the convenient saves/problem solving the dwarves would all be dead.  Disturbing but true.

Allie Brosh Has Created a Monster: Menace.

Miss Brosh has posted another wonderful thing over on her website Hyperbole & a Half about Menace.  She stumbles upon a great insight from childhood and where power can come from.  Sugar and costumes may imbue people with almost supernatural power.  At least for children.

This pic is Miss Brosh's.  And her Copyright Monster's.

Boulet's The Long Journey

It isn't often I can rave about how amazing a comic strip can be, but this one is unbelievably good.  It is one immense vertical comic, and it has everything a comic needs.  Action, wonder, and a toilet that leads to adventure.

Read this.  Boulet's The Long Journey.  I couldn't recommend any other current comic more.

Nicholas Straight: "The Call" Comic Strip

My best friend and Drawmit blogger Nick made this for the City Pages comic issue.  Hopefully he gets in- years of work and constant effort should be rewarding him soon.  This particular one is very nice and sums up most artists' struggle with creativity in life.  Too many responsibilities bog us down, and the call is smothered by life's necessities.

My Birthday Post! AND... Why I've been so behind on Blogging

Today is my birthday, so... Here's a bunch of random crap:

Other June 1st Birthdays- Heidi Klum, Andy Griffith, Brian Cox, Alanis Morisette, Marilyn Munroe, and the Voice of God himself- Morgan Freeman.

For any readers out there, this post is about things to come and why they've not already happened.  I've got exactly 2 weeks until I graduate and receive a fancy sheet of paper with a gold star proving I'm not a complete idiot.  Essentially there is so much work being a full time student and a full time (plus overtime hours) patient care worker that all my hobbies and downtime is filled with high stress crap.
There's a good idea of how much output I've been doing in the picture to the right.  That's right, roughly 200 drafts worked out.  Tons of material for a large variety of topics.

So here's what's on deck for the next couple weeks:

Gaming - I've gotten backlogged and soon to arrive:
  • Half way through Bioshock Infinite (1999 mode, first playthrough)
  • Krieg on Borderlands 2 (level 37 as of last night)
  • Downloaded Demon Souls on PSN
  • Downloading Sleeping Dogs on PSN
  • Downloaded Call of Juarez: Gunslinger on PSN
  • 10% Complete in Guacamelee
  • 23% Complete in Assassin's Creed Libereation
  • Dragon's Dogma & DD: Dark Arisen (preorder picked up)
  • Metro: Last Light (preorder picked up)
  • Remember Me
  • The Last ofUs
  • And mass amount of old games (such as Matt Hazard, Just Cause 2, etc)
     Comics -
  • Conan (Dark Horse- Davide Gianfelice is now drawing!)
  • Blade of Amala
  • Harbinger Wars (And all the other Valiant books)

     Books/Reading -
  • Halfway through The Deadhouse Gates- Malazan Book 2 (Steven Erikson)
  • 15% The Man From Primrose Lane (James Renner)
  • The Departure (Neal Asher)
  • Zero Point (Neal Asher)
  • The Other Gun (Neal Asher)
  • Joyland (Stephen King)
  • Nos4a2 (Joe Hill)

     Movies -
  • Upstream Color
  • After Earth
  • The Purge
  • This is the End
  • Man of Steel
So as you can see I've got a busy schedule coming up.

In addition, I've got a logo design to finalize for a soccer team, a bunch of short stories and a novella to edit, a possible new video game website, and something called "Project Space Hell" with a bunch of awesome friends.

Comixology: SUBMIT: A Huge Opportunity

This single new option should've been done a long while ago.  With the modern options for self publishing and E-publishing, this is something that should've happened already.  Something that one of the larger companies should have implemented long ago.  What makes this so appealing is the "advertising."  You now have the potential to be seen by a wide audience of comic loving peers.

Honestly, it is an unbelievable new option for all of us that are struggling writers/artists that continually get overlooked for work in the field of comic books.  Granted- this doesn't guarantee anything.  It doesn't mean we will gain fame or notoriety.  There is no sure fire way to be seen.  No sure way to be read or appreciated.  BUT, the sheer potential is amazing.  Just amazing.  This is an opportunity unlike most aspiring comics creators have ever had.

I feel like a wonderful future is on the horizon, despite the problem of being inundated with material in the comic book market- which WILL happen.  People will be forced to sift through a monstrous load of competition to get to whatever you/we/I produce.  But that won't really matter.  What does matter is that this will hopefully fuel a creative competition in the field to make the absolute, BEST possible creations, and that means something.  It means we now should look forward to, what I hope will be, a sort of comics Renaissance.

This new option has renewed my hope and love of comics for the future.  My interest has been waning lately with all the lackluster titles and general apathy of the big creators.  I'm sick of all the predictable storylines.  Sick of the same stupid shit happening over and over.  The industry has become tired.  Where's all the access to indie greats?  It's here and now.  This could very well be a moment to give the big 2, Marvel and DC, a run for their money.  Image has done well, and Valiant is knocking it out of the park recently (I love Bloodshot and XO Manowar!)- but now, NOW- Comixology's "Submit" could change the field in a massive way.

And you know what- we need this renewal.  New blood and fresh ideas to reinvigorate a sluggish market.  By sluggish I mean the market is over saturated with poor quality productions.  Stories and art that has lost it's appeal.  Does Wolverine have to be in 15 titles every month?  And as much as I love Batman, he may need a break.  Too much is bogging down the system.  It seems like some creators aren't even trying to produce better work.  It feels like they're just producing to make money, without the love behind it.  What happened to the excitement from years ago?  Storylines and cross overs that made me WANT to read and share and talk about.
This is a great chance for bold new creations.  A chance for subtle beauty and creative freedoms to be restored.  A new avenue for imagination without the limitations of possible publishers that "might" consider your work.  I, for one, am looking forward to both creating and finding many new comics and creators.

It's ridiculously hard to break into this field and I wish all of you well with this new road into the comics business.

     Comixology's "Submit" is an opportunity.

This is the time to act on all those dreams and aspirations.

      This is our chance.

One does not simply walk into Mordor, but perhaps 9 can.

I always laugh at some parts of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, here is one of them.  Pretty much right after saying one does not simply walk into Mordor, Boromir and the newly formed Fellowship of the Ring sets out to walk to Mordor.
Made this while completing my yearly rewatch of the extended trilogy.  I'll put up another one later, probably more as the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey nears to theatrical release in a week.

Hyperbole & 1/2: What Happened to Miss Brosh?

This is 100% Miss Brosh & Her Copyright Monster's image.
This is my personal favorite picture by her.

It's been almost a year since the last post by the ever-talented Allie Brosh from http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com and I am really wondering where she has gone to.  Those posts were complete genius and kept me laughing out loud through a crappy job.  They are pure hilarity in her unique view of life.

Hopefully the last post she put up about Adventures in Depression isn't too close to home for her.  That would be a major loss.

Well, just wondering where she's gone to and I hope everything is all right.  If life is all good and other work or life things aren't too overwhelming for her, perhaps she could even get some more posts done at Hyperbole.  I miss them "Alot*."

The Hobbit: Now in Three Parts

After reading this a couple weeks back-

'"So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.
It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."
Cheers,
Peter J'

OH! MY! GOD!   A TRILOGY!?!?  BRILLIANT!!!
-All I could think was, hey, the film industry is trying to gain more $$ from the Lord of the Rings saga by extending the single Hobbit book into not 2, but 3 films! Seriously talk about raking in some extras on this massive cash cow. Didn't the Lord of the Rings gross like 3 billion worldwide just in theaters?
     Here's a few suggestions for the 3rd movie's title-

The Hobbit: Milking Smaug's Golden Teats
The Hobbit: An Expected Lucrative Extension
The Hobbit: Give Us Your Money
The Hobbit: We're Just Making Sh*t Up Now
The Hobbit: Bilbo's Bankroll

Dark Knight Rises: Bane's quite the Joker

I had to do this.  It was a joke from something I Tweeted like last fall.  Enjoy the lame innuendo humor.

Imaginary Friends Page 4 (of 4)

I suppose for the last page I should tell people the title of this short comic is "Friends, I imagine."

Imaginary Friends Page 1 (of 4)

Nicholas Straight and I made a 4 page comic for an art show/art compilation.  Here's the first page.
I did the writing and Nick did the art.

So, I've just started watching Finge

I started watching Fringe recently, and discovered the fact that Walter Bishop may be a future version of myself. Very disconcerting to know. Just kidding, although he deserves his own "Alternate Realty" show or something. Walter 24-7 in Alpha Earth 8's prime time television spot!!!

Anyway, I made a small screencapture comic based on what I believe the Watcher/Observer guy is really all about. By like episode 6 or so he seems to be the ultimate creeper, and following Olivia Dunham around all over the place. For some reason this is all I can think of...

Another Comic Strip

This is another sketchbook image I made into a comic strip.  Originally from 2003.  The color and stuff was added last night.

A Comic Strip

Here is an old sketchbook item I cleaned up and am posting.  Originally from around 1998.
